Since I came back from India, Ayurveda is starting to become the new "buzz" word these days. It is great to see that it is being recognized but the important thing is to understand what Ayurveda actually is. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word the meaning translates to "science of life", it teaches self knowledge and self discovery and encourages people to learn about their physical, mental and spiritual health. Ayurveda is a medical system that is 5,000 years old in India that focuses on preventive care, and focuses on the root of disease. We use Ayurveda to restore balance in your lifestyle by observation of our diets, habits (bad and good) and see how these interact with your Constitution (dosha type).
Health is one of our greatest forms of wealth, the quality of our life is mostly dictated by our lifestyle or karma. If you abuse your health you are at risk of sickness likewise if you adopt a healthy lifestyle you are on the path to better health. In the ancient texts it is stated that a person who follows an Ayurvedic lifestyle and follows practices of Dinacharya, or healthy routine, in our day-to-day life have a better quality of life. Ayurveda found me when I was dealing with IBS, Celiac and other stomach issues that disrupted my life on a daily basis. When I learned about my unique constitution (dosha type) I found out that my stomach couldn't process raw foods and I should eat smaller meals at a time. I also found that oiling myself on a daily basis has helped me tremendously with my generalized anxiety. My point is and this is from experience, don't always wait to listen to someone else to tell you what's wrong! I have gone to doctors, therapists, tried medications anything to fix the symptoms I was having. Sometimes you just have to dig deeper and look at the root of the issue. Do the work on you and find someone you trust to help guide you, you know yourself best!
