Today we learned about a special Kerala treatment called Manja Kizhi. This treatment has been specifically used for men who practice Kalaripayattu. Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest fighting systems in existence which started in Kerala, India. This form of martial arts includes very aggressive strikes, kicks, grappling, and weaponry. As a result of injury, Manja Kizhi is a treatment of preference.
The term Manja Kizhi literally means "yellow bundle". In this particular treatment we mix turmeric powder, dill seed powder, and white dammer tree resin with egg whites to create a sand like texture. As you can see above you will take the mixture and disperse into a cotton cloth and bundle it tightly. Once secured you will immerse the bundle in the oil for 30 secs and test to make sure the bundle isn't too hot for application. Once appropriate you will pat and start to work the bundle into the affected area. You will need to re dip the bundle in the oil to sustain the heat. This treatment is typically done for 45 minutes. This is great for backaches and inflammation in the joints while decreasing swelling and pain. I had this done on my right ankle that I had previously turned in August and instantly felt the heat and currently don't feel any pain when I flex my foot. This is a treatment that is great for someone who is in rehab and on their way to recovery. The treatment is continued until all pain is gone.
