The Shirodhara is an effective treatment for the following diseases neurological, mental disease, migraine, neck pain, stiffness, disease of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. In this treatment medicated fluids such as oils, milks, buttermilk, are poured on the forehead in a special way. This treatment is also good for premature graying, hair loss, facial paralysis, and insomnia. In Sanskrit, Shira- means "head" and Dhara means "flow".
The treatment lasts for 45 minutes and starts with oil application to the head and body. Next, we tie a cloth or place a headband around the forehead to protect oil running into the eyes.
Lastly, we place cotton in the ears and wet cloth on eyelids to avoid distractions. This treatment is best performed in silence. The pot is moved from side to side for 45 minutes nourishing the forehead. This treatment was developed by Vaidyas (Ayurveda practitioners) in Kerala, India as a restorative therapy.
